Audrae Adams was raised in Mexico, but attended Howard University and Columbia University. She moved to San Antonio, Texas, from Mexico City to teach Spanish at St. Phillips College, an institution founded to educate African-Americans. In this picture, a portrait of her Welsh grandmother, Margaret Abrahall, hangs on the wall. Adams is of Jamaican descent.
"In Mexico, I was treated like anyone else, but when I crossed the border into Laredo, Texas, the conductor told me I had to sit in the back of the rail car. I asked him why, and he said, 'That's the way it is here.' "
