Charros races after a pony in the Mexican spectacle known as the charreada.
The charreada is a tradition among many people of Mexican descent in the United States. It is a combination of competitions derived from ranching, much like the American rodeo, but has more pageantry and symbolism. Speed is not a factor in many events. Instead, teamwork and skill are regarded more highly. These photos were shot in Vado and Sunland Park, New Mexico.
At right, a young charro ponders his upcoming performance. Below, as in the American country and western song about cowboys, a child observes his own heroes, the charros.
