Eric Scott pours dirt on spot fires in a futile attempt to put them out by U.S. Highway 92 near DeLand during the height of the fires in July 1998.

The battle was long and hard

Above, traffic moves along on a stretch of U.S. Highway 92, also known as International Speedway Boulevard, as a cluster of trees is lost to the merciless inferno.

Ormond Beach firefighters Bryan Mathis, left, and Steve Castaldi lug a hose toward a hot spot. J.P. Duncan, of Ft. Myers, pours water on his face mask to keep from breathing smoke.
