The San Antonio Spurs gave their spiritual leader and future Hall of Fame player David Robinson a fitting retirement party when they won the 2003 NBA championship. It was the second championship for the Spurs in five years.
I had the good fortune of being assigned to cover a few Spurs home games during the regular season. However, I did not draw the prime assignment of covering their NBA championship series against the New Jersey Nets.
But on the night it was anticipated that the Spurs would win the championship, the entire photography staff of the San Antonio Express-News, where I work, was mobilized. My assignment was to make celebration pictures as the joyous crowd left the SBC Center, where the game was being played.
On my way to the game, I found a San Antonio family watching the game on the porch of their home. I felt that this situation reflected the mood of the city on that night. It seemed that everyone was watching, whether at home, work or at the arena.
Although we had no credentials to cover the game, fellow Express-News photographer Mark Sobhani and I were able to get into the arena in the waning moments of the game. We each proceeded to shoot our assignment celebration pictures, but we were also able to make some action pictures and the players on the court as they celebrated.
